Play – do – go

 Use “play” with any competitive game that you can usually play with a ball

Play football, handball, tennis, golf

Exception:  Play chess

Use “do” with groups of related physical activities or martial arts

Do judo, karate, yoga, gymnastics, and athletics

Use “go” with activities ending in “-ing” that can be done alone

Go swimming, jogging, windsurfing, horse riding, canoeing and dancing.

Note: Of course, sometimes there are verb forms of the sports themselves, especially those ending

in “– ing”

I go skiing or I ski, I go swimming or I swim
